The story on the shirt
Pilots called the F4U Corsair the bent-wing bird. The men on the other end of its guns had a different name for it: Whistling Death, for the shriek its wing-root intakes made in a dive.
The scene is the Slot, the channel through the Solomon Islands where the air war over Guadalcanal was fought. It is the cover art for Whistling Death, the first novel about VMF-333, the fictional Marine squadron known as the Wild Banshees.
The painted edge is worn on purpose, like a print that has been pinned to a ready-room wall for a few tours.
